When a nail stamp is not picking up, first confirm the plate’s protective film is removed and every surface is clean and dry. Then test a known simple image while changing only one factor: polish amount, scrape pressure, speed, pickup pressure, motion, or tool compatibility. 1. Remove confirmed protective film
New plates may arrive with a thin shipping film. Check the product instructions and plate edge under good light. When a film is confirmed, peel it off completely before cleaning the plate.
Do not attack an uncoated plate with metal tools because a video said all invisible problems are plastic. Scratches and burrs do not improve etched detail.
2. Clean residue without mixing methods
Old polish, oil, lint, or shipping residue can block fine grooves. Clean the plate using its approved method, then let it dry fully.
Clean the stamper head only as its own manufacturer directs. Do not automatically use acetone, alcohol, filing, buffing, or soap. Head materials differ, and an incompatible cleaner can cause clouding, swelling, stickiness, or permanent pickup changes. Adhesive tape or a lint roller is often used for loose polish where permitted, but the product instructions decide.
3. Test an opaque compatible polish
Use a polish intended or known to work with stamping and apply enough to fill the selected etching. Very sheer, fast-drying, old, or stringy polish may produce a faint or partial pickup.
Do not add random thinner or remover. Follow the polish manufacturer’s storage and restoration guidance. Work with ventilation and keep all flammable products away from ignition sources.
4. Scrape once at a lower angle
Hold the scraper at a low angle and cross the image once with light-to-moderate pressure. A nearly vertical scraper or heavy force can pull polish from the grooves; a feather-light pass can leave a flooded surface.
Inspect the plate immediately. The surface should be cleared while the etched lines remain filled. Change angle or pressure—not both—on the next paper test.
5. Shorten the pause
The polish layer is thin and can dry quickly. Place tools within reach, load, scrape, and pick up in one prepared sequence. Do not stop between steps to recap another bottle, answer a message, or contemplate the emotional life of the scraper.
Speed does not mean panic. Rehearse the dry motion first so the live attempt has fewer decisions.
6. Reduce pickup pressure
Pressing hard can squeeze polish out of the etching, flatten a soft head, or smear lines. Start with light contact and one motion. If nothing transfers, increase pressure slightly on the next test while keeping polish, scrape, and timing unchanged.
Test both a gentle roll and a straight press only when the stamper guidance permits them. Repeated rocking blends separate experiments into one unhelpful wobble.
7. Check tool and image compatibility
A very fine, shallow, broad, or deeply etched design may behave differently from a simple medium image. Test a second area of the plate and, when available, a known working plate or stamper. This isolates the component without declaring it defective from one attempt.

If the head is torn, permanently cloudy, swollen, sticky, or detached, stop using it and consult the maker’s replacement guidance. Do not cut, heat, or chemically “repair” it unless the manufacturer specifically supports that procedure.

Write plate image, polish, scraper angle, pickup motion, and result. A row such as “light scrape, immediate roll, full pickup” is enough.
Once a transfer works, repeat it before adding new variables. Then test placement and top coat separately. The aim is not one lucky stamp; it is knowing which small sequence persuaded the image to make the trip.
